Related Experience MUNICIPAL PROJECTS
Union Station, Worcester, MA
For 20 years, our office has been renovating, repairing and improving Union Station, Worcester’s transportation hub.
Built in 1911 the station was abandoned in 1971 and fell into extensive disrepair before a full restoration in 2000. Our work here has followed the reopening of the station and included several notable projects including:
Cannabis Control Commission Offices. A joint effort between Nault and Worcester Architectural Services for the preparation of the City’s bid to be the headquarters for the State’s newly-formed Cannabis Control Commission was successful, beating out countless municipalities. With DCAMM as the client, we designed the renovation of ~15,000 sf of tenant space on the second floor to provide the hub for cannabis sales licensing state-wide. The renovation provides office space for staff, landing-pad bench space for field-personnel, conference rooms and a large sub-dividable meeting room for public hearings.
Worcester Regional Food Hub. Food Hub’s mission is to increase local food access and consumption and recruit, retain, and incubate local food entrepreneurs, collectively building healthy, sustainable, and just communities. Drawing on $4.5M of Federal and local grant funding, our renovation of underutilized storage space within the station will create a culinary incubator space with six fully fit-up commercial kitchen areas, replacing the space they’ve outgrown at the Greendale People's Church and warehouse space on Rockdale Street. The design opens up to the main circulation route, drawing in and engaging visitors to the City.
Worcester Police Department Substation. As part of Worcester’s commitment to the public safety of residents and visitors, our office designed the conversion of a former Amtrack ticketing station into a dedicated police sub-station which could provide a stable base for patrol officers working within and around the station. Program spaces included a roll-call room, meeting space and a public-service window. Separately, a dedicated shower/locker room for officers is ready to be bid.
Waterproofing and Infrastructure repairs. We regularly design deferred maintenance projects in and around the station including waterproofing below-grade portions of the building, roof repairs, HVAC controls replacement, LED lighting conversion, exterior masonry and coating repairs, a new ice-melt system at the exterior drop-off, toilet rooms renovations and interior handicapped accessibility compliance renovations.
